House Harkonnen - Goliath by freakyfir House Harkonnen - Goliath by freakyfir
For this assignment, we could pick one of the three houses found in Frank Herbert's Dune and re-imagine them in our own way. I picked House Harkonnen, and imagined the family to have Yakuza-like influences, living in a polluted neo-Tokyo type of city.

I wanted their soldiers to have some sort of overpowered weapon, so I decided to make a mech, since this was somewhat a Japanese influenced House Harkonnen.

love your work, but dune ethos was not really about the super machines. Those were abandoned long ago

Here's a free tidbit: The Harkonnens like heavy troops and armor. They look down on the lighter scouting machines of the other Great Houses, and prefer their own Quads, Heavy Troopers (If they cannot contract a Sardukar legion), and Tanks. The Harkonnens LOVE tanks.

Due to technological prohibitions, as a result of the Bulterian Jihad, The suit would be unlikely to exist. It would require a "thinking machine (computer)" to make it work. Human apathy and sloth before the Jihad would prevent largely disallow it, though would not be impossible. I don't think House Harkonnen would have existed until after the Jihad. I'd have to look into that.

In the context of the games, House Ordos would use at least limited computer technology to give such a machine the ability to respond to the human operator. The Harkonnen are too blunt an technically unimaginative to devise such a system and the Atreides would not knowingly violate the prohibitions.

Although some technologies might demand a very limited use of computer technology, it may also be possible to develop systems in the suit that do not require the kinds of advanced robotics we would consider today. It would likely be more along the lines of a steampunk robot. Movement would be rather stiff and plodding.

I don't know what all the thinking is in this suit/mech, but it is import to consider that in DUNE, humans have put aside a LOT of advanced technology to develop superhuman abilities. An advanced robotic mech would be almost impossible in that setting.

Then again, it's possible that the Harkonnens contacted both the Ix and the Tlielaxu to construct it. The Ix were masters at cybernetics, constantly pushing the boundaries the Jihand perscribed, and given the Tlielaxeu's mastery of genetic engineering, they could have just hard-wired a human brain into it. Then again, the games said that the Ix and Tlielaxu hate each other. However, given that one of the later books included someone with a cybernetically-upgraded brain, it might just be possible to pull off, as it is a human brain in there, rather than a true computer. And considering that the Harkonnens were colossal assholes, I wouldn't put it past them to do something like that.

My general understanding of the DUNE universe comes from the novels. So, I'm not clear on everything in it. But your ideas make sense. I do sometimes forget the optimistic component: "What do you need to do to make that [image] happen in that universe."

So does mine. However, I also know of the "Dune: 2000" and "Emperor: Battle for Dune" RTS games.

Plus, there's the Glossaries at the end of each novel that explain some things.

Also, this might not be too advanced tech for the Duniverse, as the Baron was shown wearing anti-gravity suspenders.

hmm i'm sorry docwolph :( i didn't delve too deep into the story to understand the intricacies :\ i guess we were given a lot of room to re-imagine the houses and perhaps mine's a little too far.

It's okay. I'm not trying to pick on you or rub knowledge in your face. I completely appreciate different takes on a subject. I hope this does not turn you away from your fan efforts.

I'm sorry if I seemed to come at you the wrong way.

It is a most impressive piece of work. Thanks for sharing it.

Oowww, I specially like the guns.

Real badass, 'Scrape-your-biomass-off-the-wall', kind of gun. It fits the style and 'philosofy' of the Harkonnens.

Seems a bit claustrofobic if you're in the mech. Does someone of 1,80 m really fit inside?
